Antarctic meltwater-induced dynamical changes in phytoplankton in the Southern Ocean

Abstract IIt has been suggested that the freshwater flux due to recent melting of Antarctic ice-sheet/shelf will suppress ventilation in Southern Ocean. In this study, we performed idealized earth system simulations examine impacts meltwater on surface phytoplankton biomass The enhanced stratification leads a decrease nitrate concentration but an increase dissolved iron concentration. These changes are associated with reduced upwelling nitrate-rich deep water and trapped exported from terrestrial sediment. Because limited availability Ocean, enhances chlorophyll open ocean. However, marginal sea along coastline where is relatively sufficient, reduction induces decrease, indicating regime shift iron-limited nitrate-limited conditions.
